The belief that advances in AI will soon lead to the creation of a “superintelligence” that surpasses human abilities has long been discussed in Silicon Valley and is now gaining prominence in high-level policy discourse. This has led to policy action, such as the UK’s upcoming global summit on AI, which is centered on “safety” rather than other issues. However, claims that revolutionary superintelligent AI systems are just around the corner are speculative and technically disputed. Policymakers should be mindful of the uncertain assumptions behind superintelligence claims and focus on more evolutionary problems posed by AI.
