Professor Louis René Beres argues that a quid pro quo for subject loyalty is an irrevocable declaration that the state’s sovereignty represents the optimal path to power over death. G F Hegel and Heinrich von Treitschke have suggested connections between sovereignty and offerings of immortality, with the latter suggesting something akin to eternal fame rather than life everlasting. Realpolitik, an historical shorthand for traditional power politics, draws its animating force from the individual’s search for immortality or “staying alive”. This search may ultimately drive not only domestic kingships but also comprehensive international relations, representing a last-ditch defense against both collective and personal annihilation.
