A class action complaint has been filed against DoNotPay, the “world’s first robot lawyer” in actual court, for allegedly illegally practicing law. The lawsuit contends that DoNotPay does not have a law degree, is not barred in any jurisdiction, and is not supervised by any lawyer. The case was filed by Edelson, a legal firm in Chicago, and made public on the Superior Court of the State of California webpage for the County of San Francisco. The lawsuit states that a customer paid for legal papers from a lawyer but instead received “substandard” work. DoNotPay has asserted that it is not practicing law and is instead providing a service to help people access their legal rights.
