Swecha, a free and open-source software movement started in 2005, is now aiming to create a Telugu alternative for popular language models like ChatGPT. The idea to create an Indic language model was inspired by Sam Altman’s comment that it would be impossible to build a ChatGPT with $10 million dollars. Swecha’s chatbot would be among the first Indic language models created by an Indian start-up to compete with big players like Open AI. The movement was started to create a local operating system for the Telugu community and to reduce the language and affordability barriers that kept the Telugu working class from accessing new technology.
