Seismologists are making progress in using machine learning to improve earthquake forecasts. Three new papers have demonstrated deep-learning models that outperform conventional state-of-the-art models for forecasting aftershocks. The findings are preliminary and only apply to limited situations, but they are a rare advance towards the long-sought goal of harnessing the power of machine learning to reduce seismic risk.
