Sundar Pichai, CEO of Alphabet, parent company of Google, declared the company to be an “A.I.-first” company in 2016. At the company’s annual I/O developer conference in May, Pichai revealed a range of A.I.-powered features, such as Help Me Write, an immersive view in Google Maps, generative A.I. photo editing tools, and the PaLM 2 large language model. He also mentioned the powerful Gemini family of A.I. models, which could expand A.I.’s impact and its risks. However, Pichai did not discuss the plan for Search, Google’s first and foremost product.
