Miron Shtiglitz, director of product management at visual inspection company Lean AI, discusses the two eras of machine learning in visual inspection and argues that we are now entering a third era, characterised by various levels of semi-supervised deep learning. Rule-based solutions have been in use for at least 25 years and are effective for simple tasks, but deep learning is now the leading way of providing quality inspection. Deep learning solutions are able to solve more complex problems, but the process of providing the model with images for training needs to be done manually. This is a lengthy process and is not easy to scale. The third era of machine learning is characterised by semi-supervised deep learning, which combines the best of both rule-based and deep learning solutions.
