In 1955, John McCarthy and Marvin Minsky coined the term “artificial intelligence” (AI) in a grant proposal to fund a workshop at Dartmouth College. The term was chosen to avoid inviting Norbert Wiener, one of the founders of the nascent field, due to his pugnacious personality and the fact that he had already popularized the term “cybernetics”. AI has since become a major field of study, with researchers applying the technology to a variety of tasks.
