OpenAI’s AI chatbot ChatGPT was tested on accounting exams by researchers from 186 universities. The AI scored an overall average of 47.4%, compared to the student average of 76.7%. On 11.3% of questions, ChatGPT scored higher than the student average, doing particularly well on AIS and auditing. However, it did worse on tax, financial, and managerial assessments, possibly due to its difficulty with mathematical processes. ChatGPT did better on true/false questions and multiple-choice questions, but struggled with short-answer questions.
