Researchers at the Department of Energy’s Lawrence Berkeley National Laboratory are teaching a robotic dog to hunt out radiological material using a suite of sensors. This technology has applications in nuclear safety, nuclear security, environmental cleanup, and emergency response. The team has combined multiple sensors, such as video cameras, LIDAR, inertial measurement units, and particle detectors, into a self-contained system with power and onboard computing. This system is able to map the world in three dimensions and in real time.
