Japan is not a leader when it comes to digital transformation, with many different reasons cited for this. These include lack of software engineers, people’s unwillingness to change, and an educational system not suited for digitalization. However, the manufacturing sector is not necessarily behind in digital transformation compared to other countries, and those industries less exposed to international competition, such as transportation and healthcare, are the ones that are lagging. The true benefit of digital transformation often requires changing the work process and/or business practices, which can be costly and difficult to justify.
