Amazon is revealing the technologies behind its “Just Walk Out” frictionless shopping experience. AI, computer vision, and machine learning are used to detect when a shopper’s hand interacts with a product on the shelf and add it to a virtual cart. The system assigns a temporary numeric code to shoppers when they enter the store, which serves as their unique digital signature for that shopping trip. When they exit, the code disappears and a new one is assigned if they come back.
