Meet Fathomnet: An Open-source Image Database That Uses Artificial Intelligence And Machine Learning Algorithms To Help Process The Backlog Of Visual Data For Understanding Our Ocean And Its Inhabitants

MBARI and several research institutions have partnered to develop FathomNet, an open-source image database that utilizes cutting-edge data processing algorithms to standardize and aggregate carefully curated labeled data. This new image database is designed to speed up ocean research by utilizing the capabilities of artificial intelligence and machine learning. FathomNet combines images and recordings from many different sources to create a freely accessible, highly maintained underwater image training resource. The team believes that using AI and ML will be the only way to speed up critical studies on ocean health and remove the bottleneck for processing underwater imagery.
