Cordelia Schmid, a German computer scientist, has been awarded the Körber European Science Prize for her pioneering work in computer-aided image processing. Her algorithms enable computers to understand image content and locate a motif or an object in a database of images within a fraction of a second. She is currently researching systems that can semantically interpret videos and predict future actions. Her research is an important step towards developing robotic assistants for hospitals and care homes.
