Carnegie Mellon University’s Institute for Software Research installed high-tech sensors in more than 300 locations throughout a new building, called TCS Hall. The sensors, called Mites, measure 12 types of data, including motion and sound, as part of a research project on smart buildings. The project’s goal is to build a safe, secure, and easy-to-use Internet of Things infrastructure. However, the installation of the Mites elicited concerns from many students and faculty about surveillance without consent.
