John Deere debuted its first-ever autonomous tractor at CES 2022, signaling a new era of AI & robotic farming. The 8R is currently in the trial phase, being tested by paying test cooperators. Chris Padwick, the Director of Computer Vision and Machine Learning at Deere’s Blue River Technology division, discussed how the company has been able to accelerate into precision agriculture with its “see and spray” computer vision technology. This technology allows for highly targeted applications of herbicide to weeds in row crops, reducing the amount of herbicide used by 77% or more. The latest incarnation of the technology, which uses green-on-green technology, has fully realized the benefits of Blue River’s investment into deep learning-powered computer vision.
