The U.S. government, tech companies, the media, and urban developers are pushing for cities to become “Smart Cities”, despite the costs, privacy violations, environmental, health, and safety risks associated with them. U.S. Transportation Secretary Pete Buttigieg recently announced $94 million in grant awards to fund 59 smart city technology projects across the country. Despite pushback against biometric surveillance and control systems associated with smart city technologies, Buttigieg believes that these technologies are more important than ever. He suggests experimenting with and testing out different technologies first, rather than implementing a “grand unified system” all at once.
