In the last few decades, Optical Character Recognition (OCR) technology has seen significant advances, from its use in early deep learning research to its availability in consumer devices and third party developers. Research in scene text detection and recognition has been the major driver of this development, allowing OCR to be used in natural images with complex backgrounds. This article highlights the progress made in the field, from the introduction of new datasets to the development of sophisticated algorithms.
