Artificial intelligence (AI) is a generic concept used to discuss more specific technologies, such as machine learning, neural networks and deep learning. Recent discussions around the possibility of unexpected or ’emergent’ behaviour associated with AI have to do with deep learning in neural networks, which are structures inspired by the human brain. These networks are composed of interconnected neurons that adjust weights according to a system of rewards depending on the quality of the overall results. This process can potentially lead to consciousness and unpredictable behaviour, raising questions about the need to look again at the relevant legislation.
