IBM has developed a new chip, NorthPole, that mimics the brain’s structure and efficiency. When tested against GPUs, NorthPole was able to outperform them while using up to 96% less energy. NorthPole is a fully digital chip that tightly packs 22 billion transistors onto 256 cores. It takes its cues from the brain by placing computing and memory modules next to each other and linking them with long-range connections. This innovation could allow for faster, more energy efficient chips that can run AI on the edge.
