Mental health issues have been on the rise for the past few decades, with the Substance Abuse and Mental Health Services Administration (SAMHSA) of the United States Department of Health and Human Services reporting that mental and substance use disorder (M/SUD) treatment spending is expected to total $280.5 billion in 2020. U.S. Surgeon General Dr. Vivek Murthy recently released an advisory report titled “Our Epidemic of Loneliness and Isolation” which highlights the significant public health concerns caused by mental health issues, such as loneliness and lack of social connection, and the associated risks of cardiovascular disease, dementia, stroke, depression, anxiety, and premature death.
