The Future of Life Institute published an Open Letter to “Pause [the] Giant AI Experiment” on March 28, calling for a moratorium on the training of large language models for 6 months due to the potential of a “superintelligence” leading to the extinction of humanity. There has been much criticism and disagreement with the letter, as it is seen as a way to fuel the AI hype and market the “too powerful tools” that need to be tamed. Longtermism is the ideology underlying the concerns expressed by the Future of Life Institute, which seeks to maximise human well-being in the future at the expense of the present.
