Dr. Aniket Bera, Associate Professor at the Department of Computer Science at Purdue University, is an expert on affective computing, which uses machine learning and other computer science methods to program artificial intelligence programs to better understand human behavior and emotion. He has been working on projects to detect feelings such as when a customer is angry or depressed, or when an employee is upset or about to commit fraud. Dr. Bera explains that he has been working on this research for some time, and that the key ingredient missing in many technologies is the human angle, which is necessary for robots, virtual therapists, and chat boxes to understand us.
