OpenAI launched ChatGPT, a chatbot powered by artificial intelligence, in November 2022. As of February 2023, it is widely used and discussed, particularly in the world of higher education. Matthias Scheutz, a professor in Tufts’ computer science department, explains that the purpose of ChatGPT is to mine the web for natural language texts and encode them in a neural network. Questions such as whether AI can think or ‘know,’ are ethical, and should users follow its advice, remain unanswered.
