Carnegie Mellon University researchers have designed, planned and executed a chemistry experiment using a non-organic intelligent system called Coscientist. The system uses large language models to execute the full range of the experimental process with a simple, plain language prompt. The system can scour the Internet, documentation data and other available sources, synthesize the information and select a course of experimentation that uses robotic application programming interfaces (APIs). This allows a human working with the system to design and run an experiment much more quickly, accurately and efficiently than a human alone.
