In this article, Prof Alan Smeaton from DCU discusses the two forms of AI currently in use, the old form which works in the background and the new form which is more visible and accessible. He explains that the old form of AI is used in Netflix recommendations, shopping recommendations, medical diagnosis, computer vision, drug discovery, and vaccination discovery. The new form of AI is happening at a much faster rate than before and has caused fears and knee-jerk reactions. He also discusses the potential of AI to replace jobs and the need for regulation.
