Businesses are facing a global skills shortage that is impacting their ability to produce materials, manufacture goods, and provide services. This is leading to rising labor costs and squeezing margins for small to medium enterprises. AI, robotics, digital transactions, and related automation provide the means for SMEs to enhance and build capabilities cost-effectively. A survey of 2,000 supply chain executives found that recruiting and keeping qualified workers is the leading challenge, with a range of industries facing labor shortages. Technology can fill in many of the gaps resulting from skills shortages, but a combination of technology and human skills development strategies is needed to rebuild distressed supply chains.
