After car companies backed off their projections for fully autonomous driving a couple of years ago, Ford and Volkswagen announced they were shutting down their self-driving joint venture, Argo AI, based in Pittsburgh. However, the industry has since shifted its focus to more realistic expectations and customer use cases, such as improving existing product lines, capturing more market share, and operating more efficiently. Pittsburgh Robotics Network president Joel Reed believes the industry is now in a “trough of disillusionment” as it works to properly reset expectations.
