Researchers at the University of Washington have used Artificial Intelligence (AI) to design tailor-made, functional proteins that they could synthesize and produce in live cells. This study, published in Nature on February 22, has enabled new opportunities for protein engineering and is seen as the beginning of a new field. Ali Madani, founder and CEO of Profluent, a company that uses other AI technology to design proteins, remarks that this study “went the distance” in protein design.
