As the use of artificial intelligence (AI) continues to expand, governments around the world are looking into the implications of its use in the military. This article examines the challenges of regulating the use of military AI and the steps taken to ensure its responsible use. Military AI uses machine learning, deep learning, natural language processing and other computer science techniques to gain advantages in military operations, such as analytics, strategy, planning and decision-making, surveillance and reconnaissance. It has also been used to automate weapons systems and has been proposed for use in autonomous combat systems.
