A new chatbot, ChatGPT, is able to handle questions on the US medical licensing exam (USMLE). Companies such as Microsoft and Google have invested heavily in the chatbot’s maker, OpenAI, and have released their own version, Bard. Generative AI is the technology behind this chatbot, which analyzes patterns in written words from across the web to form coherent responses. While the technology is promising, more research is needed to assess if generative AI can overcome current legal and ethical barriers to deliver effective care.
