The US Navy is set to lose 8.85% of its current Surface Navy Vertical Launch System (VLS) capacity through 2027. This is the equivalent of eight Arleigh Burke-class destroyers leaving the fleet as the Ticonderoga cruisers are retired. However, even the most aggressive and expensive shipbuilding alternative would not return equivalent VLS numbers to the surface fleet until the late 2030s. Service life extension proposals are also unsavory and costly.
