This article discusses the moral implications of using autonomous weapons in war, and questions who should be held responsible for war crimes committed by machines. Robert Sparrow argues that it is often impossible to identify a person or machine who can be held morally responsible. The article was awarded an honourable mention in the undergraduate category of the 2023 National Oxford Uehiro Prize in Practical Ethics.
