In the race to develop Artificial Intelligence (AI), China has been seen as having a “natural advantage” due to its autocratic state and ability to gather vast amounts of data. However, new “small data” approaches may prove to be more efficient and quicker, if the Pentagon ensures they are not starved for funding. This was observed as early as 2017, and a 2021 report from Georgetown University’s Center for Security and Emerging Technology has highlighted the potential of these approaches.
