The push towards hardware disaggregation and customization is now being mirrored on the software side, where operating systems are becoming smaller and more targeted, supplemented with additional software that can be optimized for different functions. This shift is driven by increasing demand for highly optimized and heterogeneous designs, as well as the rollout of AI/ML across a wide variety of devices. Smaller, more targeted OSes are more efficient and provide better performance than monolithic operating systems.
