This article discusses the use of artificial intelligence (AI) in remote sensing applications, specifically focusing on the challenges posed by the large, complex nature of remote sensing big data. The article highlights the need for explainable AI (XAI) in order to bridge the gap between advanced AI algorithms and remote sensing communities, where a clear physical or cognitive understanding of data features and predictions is crucial. The Special Issue seeks contributions on the theory and applications of XAI in remote sensing big data.
