A recent study published in Nature Communications explored the potential of explainable artificial intelligence (XAI) to improve accuracy in distinguishing between melanoma and nevus. The study found that XAI, trained with annotations from dermatologists, demonstrated a significant balanced accuracy of 81% on the test set, outperforming other models tested. Additionally, the study showed that XAI can play a role in improving confidence and trust in AI among dermatology clinicians.
