AI experts have warned that Taiwan’s development of machine-learning technology is hindered by the preponderance of content written in simplified Chinese characters on the Internet. The National Science and Technology Council’s Trustworthy Artificial Intelligence Dialog Engine is outgunned by the competition in China, which has superior funding, computing power, staffing and content available for training the AI. Academia Sinica’s own experimental chatbot was exposed to Chinese content during its training, resulting in the bot claiming to be Chinese and calling Chinese President Xi Jingping the leader of Taiwan. To prevent Chinese influence on the AI, Taiwanese researchers are converting simplified Chinese characters to traditional ones.
