Explainable Artificial Intelligence (XAI) is a new field of research that focuses on designing and deploying interpretable and explainable intelligent systems. It has attracted scholars from multiple disciplines, including computer science, psychology, philosophy, and social science, and has been echoed in the research literature and the press. XAI has shifted its focus to ante hoc methods for producing self-interpretable models and neuro-symbolic approaches for reasoning. Additionally, scholars have shifted the focus onto the structure of explanations, linking AI and computer sciences to psychology, human-computer interaction, philosophy, and sociology. This Special Issue calls for contributions to this new area of research.
