Artificial intelligence (AI) research has been accelerating in recent years, with people interacting with AI more frequently. Some researchers and activists are wondering if AI is nearing the point of sentience, the ability to think and feel on the same level as humans. This article looks at the history of AI, where AI research is now, and how we can determine if AI has crossed the border into sentience. It also looks at the Dartmouth Summer Research Project on Artificial Intelligence, which is often marked as an initial jumping-off point for modern developments in AI, and the U.S. Department of Defense’s funding of AI research in the 1960s.
