Companies are increasingly using machine learning algorithms to measure employee engagement and forecast turnover risk, but evidence-based lists of high-performance HR practices still suggest that regular employee opinion surveys should not be abandoned. Surveys are still great predictors of behavior, give employees the chance to feel heard, and are a vehicle for changing behavior. Internal research at Facebook suggests that surveys are more than twice as accurate at foretelling future turnover than machine-learning forecasts, and those who don’t fill out surveys are 2.6 times more likely to leave in the next six months.
