South Africa has begun the process of shutting down its legacy cellular networks, starting with the sale of new 2G and 3G devices. While this will free up network resources, there are concerns about the impact on essential systems such as old sensors and machine-to-machine devices. MTN and Vodacom are working with M2M and IoT customers to upgrade to more efficient 4G technologies before the 2G network is fully shut down.
