Last week, images of former US President Barack Obama and German Chancellor Angela Merkel went viral. However, these images were fake and generated by a visual artist. This week, images of former President Donald Trump being arrested also went viral, but these too were fake and generated using deepfakes, which are realistic digital manipulations of image, audio and video that use machine learning to create convincing fake content.
