A paper published by Google has suggested that large language models are best understood as “stochastic parrots” – programs that generate plausible text without any human-like understanding. The paper argues that much of what is now hyped as AI is still a form of machine learning, which involves mining vast troves of data in order to optimize for useful prediction.
