Apple is reportedly in negotiations with various providers of generative AI services to use their large language models on the upcoming iPhone 16 and iOS 18. The company is looking for a third party to help deliver AI services that require server-based processing, while some AI features will be processed directly on the device. Google Gemini and OpenAI’s ChatGPT are potential frontrunners for the partnership, with Baidu being an alternative in China. Apple is expected to demo most of the iPhone’s AI capabilities at WWDC 2024, with some features available in the iOS 18 beta. The recent development of Google’s custom chip for AI applications further suggests that Gemini may be the right fit for Apple.
