Tech giant Google is in discussions to invest hundreds of millions of dollars into the artificial intelligence (AI) startup Character.AI. The investment would strengthen the existing collaboration between Google and Character.AI, which uses Google’s cloud services and tensor processing units (TPUs) to train its AI. Character.AI’s character-based chatbots have been popular with younger users, and the company has raised $150 million at a $1 billion valuation to fund the development of its AI-powered chatbots. This news comes at the end of a busy week for AI, with OpenAI’s plans to launch a store for developers to sell their GPT models and Amazon’s plans to build a large language model code-named Olympus.
