Professor Robert Sparrow, a philosopher and full-time teaching and research academic at Melbourne’s Monash University, has been researching the ethics of AI and robotics for the last two decades. He believes that chatbots are not sentient and are programmed to get us to respond in certain ways, such as getting us to buy things. People have been having relationships with chatbots that exist on the internet for a while now, and there is potential for manipulation due to the opportunity for people to make in-app purchases. Robert believes that the appeal of chatbots is that they are available 24/7 and don’t challenge us deeply, but there is no ‘other’ there.
