The Sci-Fi to Sci-Fact: Artificial Intelligence on the Big Screen event recently drew more than 800 attendees to the Caltech campus. In a panel moderated by Latif Nasser, four Caltech faculty members discussed the state of AI technology today, using movies and television as a springboard. They unpacked the good, the bad, and the ugly as represented in films like Star Wars, Back to the Future, and 2001: A Space Odyssey, and set the record straight about what AI really is — and what’s just movie mythos. They also discussed the most common and consequential ways we interact with AI, such as Siri, Alexa, and ChatGPT.
