Wikipedia, the open-source encyclopedia, celebrated its 22nd anniversary in January 2021. However, a Wikipedia editor, Barkeep49, has expressed concern that the rise of GPT-3 and other chatbots could eventually displace the website and its human editors. Barkeep49 believes that the newer versions of the technology have made him more convinced of the threat, and he speculates that Wikipedia could be fine for the next few years before suddenly dropping off a cliff. Despite the potential threat, Wikipedia remains a throwback to the Internet’s utopian early days, with its goal of providing free access to the sum of all human knowledge.
