ChatGPT is a chatbot technology that can be used by dance artists as a tool for brainstorming, planning rehearsals, generating new movement, and documenting work. However, it is important to note that the technology should not replace the artistic intuition and expertise of experienced dancers. AI tools are further complicating the dance world’s relationships to copyright, crediting, compensation, and consent, and have the potential to remove artists from the dancemaking process. Despite this, AI can be used as a choreographic tool, a topic to probe onstage, or an entryway into the broader intersection of dance and technology. Big data companies are also eager to use dancers and their embodied knowledge to profit from movement data. This trend has the potential to create new opportunities for dance artists, but also to unleash a movement-data-harvesting free-for-all.
